A nearly full weight eight reale from the 1715 Fleet. In the early 1700's coins
from the Mexico City Mint were very irregular in shape. Many times a silver bar
was poured into a burlap sack or a rock mold. After it cooled somewhat a piece of
metal was cut off the end and then stamped and filed to the proper weight for a
coin of the realm. That is the case with this coin. There isn't much detail,
just a portion of the shield and Florenzada Cross. This isn't due to wear though.
It was struck that way. The only intent was to have the piece the right weight and
fineness of silver for the king. It didn't have to be beautiful. This one was
recovered from the wreck of the 1715 Fleet which was sunk off of Ft. Pierce, Florida.
It weighs an incredible 26.4 grams, nearly full weight for a coin of this period.
There isn't much wear on it. It is virtually as struck as far as detail. Don't
miss out on this coin. They are getting harder to find and more pricey every day.
This coin is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
