This Bone box was excellently scrimshawed by Sam Gibbons. It features Commodore Porter and one of the ships of his command, the Alligator. The Alligator was a 12 gun American Schooner which was built specifically to interdict slave ships bringing slaves to America. The import of slaves had been expressly outlawed in 1807 in America. It's first commander was named Allen, who was killed in a skirmish with slavers, prompting Commodore Perry to name Key West "Allentown". Under a new Captain the Alligator captured a slaver, which it attempted to transport back to America. It struck the Carysfort Reef on the north end of the Florida Keys to the east of Key Largo on about the 16th of November. After three days of making attempts to get her off the reef, her cargo and crew were off loaded onto a sister ship and she was burned to the waterline. The rendering of the Alligator is very accurate and corresponds to hand drawn pictures of the Alligator at the time. The box has a hinge that opens to allow you to place your hidden treasures inside. It measures 110 mm. long, 60 mm. wide, and 25 mm. deep. This is the perfect gift for the person that is hard to buy for or the person who loves treasure and history. I have one for myself in my collection. Don't miss the opportunity. Sam doesn't make many of these boxes featuring historical treasure references.
