This wonderful artifact is gold which was recovered from the wreck of the "
SS Central America" , the "ship of gold", which sank in 1857 while
returning from the great gold fields of California. The shipped was filled with
gold prospectors returning with their fortunes they had made, with 426 losing their
lives. The Central America was the most valuable ship in terms of actual treasure
ever recovered. This slabbed gold contains a "pinch" of gold, equal to
about the weight of a gold dollar of the period. It comes in a wooden presentation
box with the gold encapsulated in a numbered slab (plastic holder) with certificate
of authenticity and the story of the SS Central America. This is the least expensive
way to get any gold from this very famous American shipwreck. There are few of these
great presentation pieces left on the market today.
