As crosses go on Atocha coins, they don't get much better than this one. Although slightly double struck, each lion and castle is easily visible. The obverse of this coin must have been exposed to the ocean, because it got a lot of seawear. Most of the detail is still visible however. This coin was minted at the Potosi Mint by assayer Juan Ballesteros between 1580 and 1605. The mintmark P and assayer's mark be are easily visible to the left. A portion of the denomination oVIII is visible to the right. Grade two coins sell at the museum for $1800 and up, with B assayer coins bringing a premium because of their quality. This one is accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity as it was issued by Treasure Salvors. A great coin for a souvenir or to be mounted to wear.
