This Atocha 8 reale grade one was minted at the Potosi Mint between 1618 and 1622. It bears the shield of Phillip III of Spain on the obverse, with a portion of the P mintmark to the left the T assayer below, and the 8 denomination to the right. The reverse features a Crusader's Cross with lions and castles reversed. This was a common error made by the T assayer, Juan de Tapia. Tapia made many errors and reversals in his coins which make his coins quite collectible. There is also a partial date 16XX in the upper left quadrant. The coin is mounted in a heavy 14 kt. yellow gold hand made bezel, with a 3-D Mermaid across the top. Grade one coins sell for $3000 and up at the museum in Key West, and that is without a bezel. This coin is accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity from the Atocha and is guaranteed to be genuine.
