This silver 2 reale was recovered from the wreck of the Consolacion, which was attacked by pirates and sunk near the "Isla de Muerto" (The Island of The Dead) off the coast of Ecuador in 1681. The Spanish Galleon was enroute from Peru to Panama to off load its gold and passengers for the overland trip to Porto Bello. There they would board another galleon for Colombia, Havana, or Spain. The Consolacion was attacked by pirates and the decision was made to scuttle the ship on the rocks to keep the treasure away from the piratess. This so angered the pirates that they killed all 350 persons aboard the Consolacion. Although they tried, the pirates were not successful in plundering the treasure. In the late 1990's fishermen stumbled on the treasure and salvage began. This is one of those coins. It is an 2 reale minted at the Potosi Mint in 1678 by assayer E. There is a tic-tac-toe design where the denomination appears in the upper left and lower right of the quadrants on the obverse. The assayer's mark appears in the upper right and lower left quadrant. The denomination appears at the center top. The date appears at the center bottom. The legend "Plus Ultra" appears accross the middle. The reverse features a Crusader's Cross with the denomination at the top, the mintmark to the left. the assayer's mark to the right, and the date at the bottom. Occasionally there is a second or third date visible on the coin, which makes them very scarce. This coin is accompanied by the certificate of authenticity, and is GUARANTEED TO BE GENUINE.
