Rare Uncleaned Clump of Atocha Two Reale Coins
Rare Uncleaned Clump of Atocha Two Reale Coins

This is a very rare uncleaned Atocha clump of two reales, only the second I have seen. Almost all of the coins from the Atocha have been cleaned, as was demanded by the investors in the search for the Atocha. That way each person was sure that his division was correct. These coins however are part of the original Napkin Deal of Atocha fame where Mel Fisher traded away two chests of silver coins for $8000 early on in his search for the Atocha. Raising funds was a difficult and ongoing process before the Motherlode of the Atocha was found by Mel in 1985. He had to do almost anything to raise money. A certificate from the Napkin Deal is accompanying this clump as well explaining what the deal was and who was involved. This coin is part of the two chests gotten by the investor. The chests were sold to Mel's Marine Archaeologist and Conservator (then and now) James Sinclair and his wife. This small group is all that is left of the two chests that haven't been cleaned. Who knows what rare coin is in this group. One of the 1621 Santa fe De Bogota 8 reales came out of this chest. It is valued at $25,000 or more in real dollars. A second also with just the one on it came from this chest, and it sold for $12,000. Could one of these be a rare coin? Who knows? You can clean them and find out for yourself. Years ago I bought a couple of clumps. They cost me a thousand dollars per coin at the time. They are certainly much rarer now. This clump contains two two reales which haven't been cleaned. If they turn out to be 2 reale grade ones, they would sell for $6000 at the museum in Key West. I personally like the history of the coins. No one has seen the detail on any of these coins since 1622 when they were placed in the chest. This clump is accompanied by the original Atocha certificate of authenticity as issued as well as one from the Paper Napkin deal. The clump weighs 14.5 grams, what you would expect two full weight and very nice two reales to weigh plus the matrix. Don't miss out on this rare find.
